Ash Wednesday
|
|
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. A special service is held where palm crosses are burned. The ash is mixed with water and used to make the sign of the cross on people's foreheads. The priest reminds the congregation that although the ash will be washed off, the sign of the cross will stay with them. The palm crosses are a reminder for each person of last Easter. Now, as they prepare for a new Easter, the old crosses are burned and each person looks at their lives again. Lent is a journey. It starts on Ash Wednesday when Christians ask God to forgive them for the things they have done wrong. As they go through Lent they examine their lives to make them better. At the end they celebrate Jesus' resurrection - when He rose from death to new life.
