Curriculum Overview
English
Based on the National Literacy Strategies programmes for Year 5. Writing areas include: significant writers; myths, legends and fables; classic narrative poems such as “The Highwayman”; ballad form and poetic devices (rhyme, half rhyme, alliteration, assonance, stress, rhythm, structure of verses); the use of language for persuasive purposes; paragraphing.Comprehension exercises focus on reading accurately, understanding and explaining inference and appreciating an author’s intention.Spelling is based on NLS lists and are tested weekly by dictation.
Mathematics
Using approximations and estimations to extend and consolidate mental and written strategies, including decimals to two decimal places and doubling and halving numbers to 100. Equivalence of simple fractions, decimals and percentages in relation to division. Consolidation and extension of names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Ordering negative numbers. Line and rotational symmetry. Recognise, draw and measure angles. Using time on digital and analogue clocks to solve problems related to time. Perimeter and area of compound shapes. Data handling using mode, mean and median. Conversion of metric measures.
Science
Topics will consider all aspects of investigations – obtaining, recording and considering evidence.Topics include: Materials and their properties: grouping, classifying, changing and separating. Forces and Motion; and Ourselves – nutrition, circulation and good health. Living things – plants and animals: growth and nutrition, reproduction, variation and classification, and how living things adapt within their environment.
Information Technology
Reinforce and extend skills learnt in earlier years. Develop competence in word processing by changing font style and size, page layout, borders etc. Continue to develop keyboard skills, and begin to use some of the more advanced features of the art software. Use the Internet to research topics and begin to use search engines to locate sites. Learn how to send and receive e-mails correctly. Create a database about flowers seen at Sayers Croft and a spreadsheet using data collected. Use “Roamer World” to investigate the programming language “Logo”.
History
Understand the major events that took place in England in Tudor Times and place them within a chronological framework. Investigate the personalities of the famous people of the period. Compare and contrast aspects of life at different levels of society. Appreciate the arts and architecture of the time. Understand the reasons for exploration at this time. Understand the key features of a past non- European society.
Geography
Extend knowledge of the location of countries, cities/towns, mountain ranges, and rivers. Use atlases, globes and maps at a range of scales. Draw plans and maps. Develop knowledge of direction and use of a compass. Introduce bearings to locate position. Use appropriate fieldwork techniques and instruments. Understand and compare how land is used in different areas of the UK and the Sayers Croft area in detail. Study and debate a conservation issue.Identify the world’s climate zones and understand their physical and human features.
Religious Education
Learn how Jesus used parables and performed miracles, what faith is and what difference it makes; understand why light is used as a symbol at Christmas. Find out about the Christian church and what it is for and why Easter is important to Christians. Consideration of the question ‘Who is God?’What it means to be a Muslim.What it means to be a Jew.
French
Revise questions and answers about name, age, weather, dates; speak about home, parts of body, face and clothes; learn parts of “to be”, “to have”, and other regular verbs and how to apply them; speak using descriptive phrases with agreement of adjectives; learn and apply numbers 1-100; speak about likes, dislikes and hobbies in 1st, 2nd, 3rd person; learn phrases to apply in restaurants, cafés, shops and to ask directions.Reading and Writing: written and taped exercises.
Art
Revise and extend colour mixing techniques. Record observations and ideas and experiment with line, texture, colour, form, shape, tone, pattern and space. Recognise ways in which art reflects the place in which it is made.
Experiment with ideas for their work suggested by visual material. Explore
ideas using clay or textiles.
Design Technology
Learn how to design, modify and produce plans. Use own plans to complete all the procedures needed to form a finished product – a Tudor house, a moving toy using levers and a picture using cross stitching. Learn to select and use a range of tools, materials and processes appropriately and safely.
Drama
Exploration of self-expression, imagination and artistic awareness in less familiar situations. Areas of study “Sculpture and Statues”. Development of character, co-operation and self-discipline using props and costume. Read and understand play scripts, exploring implicit themes and issues within the storyline, appreciate character development and learn relevant skills required for performance.
Music
Music lessons will continue to provide a combination of singing, listening, composing and performing in groups and individually. In singing this term girls will learn a large repertoire of songs, both traditional and modern, including rounds and solos, from word sheets and musical scores. In curriculum lessons they will be exploring the use of sounds in response to the stimulus of space, composing their own space pieces, using IT where possible. They will learn to perform rhythmic patterns confidently and with a strong sense of pulse and they will learn about music from the Tudor period.
Physical Education
Games: Practise & repeat skills of sending, receiving, striking & travelling with equipment. Understand & play simplified versions of team & individual games. Develop skills of attack & defence. Experience a variety of roles. Autumn & spring term netball, autumn term hockey, summer term rounders & tennis.Gym: Develop & practise different ways of matching & mirroring, turning & spinning, using body to make bridges & different shapes using the floor & apparatus. Plan, perform & repeat movement sequences with a partner & in small groups. One lesson a week in autumn & spring terms.Dance: Select & combine skills, techniques & ideas & apply them accurately & appropriately, consistently showing precision, control & fluency. Analyse, modify & refine skills & techniques to improve performance. One lesson a week in spring term.Swimming: Increase confidence & stamina. Practise & improve recognised strokes. Develop diving skills, starts & finishes and survival skills. One lesson a week all year.Athletic activities: Practise/improve personal technique in running, throwing & jumping. Compare & make judgements about own & others performance. One lesson a week in summer term.
