French day trip to Boulogne
Wednesday 19th May. An exciting day. Apart from getting up at 4:15 in the morning. We all had to be at school at 5am. Everyone clambered onto the coach rather heavy-eyed and tired. The coach then took us to the Shuttle which took us over the Channel to France.

First Stop: Boulogne Market. The market sold everything from souvenirs and sweets to garlic and cheese. A lot of euros were spent! The stall owners at the market were very helpful-they realised we were English, so they were very patient with our French. One stall owner even gave us a free garlic if we bought a string of them! After we had finished shopping, we had a quick peek in the Boulangerie.
We arrived early in Boulogne and having identified the Patisserie, Fromagerie and Bijouterie, went straight to the marketplace which proved a treasure trove for all. As well as olives, vine tomatoes and strings of onions and garlic, there was an amazing range of cheeses from all parts of France.

The girls also favoured strings of beads, Eiffel Tower keyrings and dubious perfumes as well as the sweet counter! Some of the stallholders did indeed speak in English, unfortunately, but many talked in French and most girls had the chance to try out their accents.

Next stop: Nausicaa Sealife Centre. Here we had lunch and looked at all the fish. We saw sea lions, sharks, jellyfish, little fish, big fish and colourful tropical fish, stingrays, starfish and baby sharks. When a shark unexpectedly swam near the glass, everyone was startled. We had quite a time in Nausicaa!

Next stop: The Chocolaterie in Beussent. We arrived there half an hour later than planned. The coach drivers took the wrong route and we were on our way to Paris at one point.
We went to Nausicaa, a renowned Sea-Life Centre and marvelled at many peculiar-looking deep sea fish as well as having fun with the exhibits.

We were allowed to stroke the sting-rays and we saw sharks but by far the most popular were the lazy sea-lions basking in the sun or swimming round about us.

In the factory we were shown how to colour chocolate. We were shown how dark and milk chocolate were made. In the factory there were amazing sculptures made completely of chocolate. Each had great detail. Afterwards, they did a booming trade in the chocolate shop and the teachers were given a huge box of chocolates. The drivers even got free chocolate!

We returned back to school at 20:55, five minutes earlier than expected. Everyone had enjoyed their day!

At the Chocolaterie in the countryside we girls saw the most amazing animals all life-sized and made out of chocolate. The tour showed us how chocolates were made and of course we all tried one.

The packed shop after the tour round the chocolate factory. Although it was just for one day, the girls had a chance to experience a real flavour of France and were superbly behaved.

Mrs Marriott
