The qualities pertaining to the good citizen concern for others, being helpful and considerate, being prepared to take responsibility, taking an interest in the common good and the like are qualities we, as parents and teachers, seek to instil in the children. The Government is obviously keen on schools promoting good citizenship and positive values to counteract anti-social tendencies. As a Christian and Catholic School we are called to look beyond our own needs and wants to those of the wider community.

The Brentwood Diocese is encouraging schools to participate in an annual award scheme in order to highlight the importance of good citizenship. We have participated in this scheme for the first time this year; nominations from amongst pupils in the school were sought and the decision made for one of our Year 5 pupils, Stephanie Warren, to receive this award at a Citizenship for Schools ceremony held last week in Brentwood Cathedral. Stephanie was presented with her award by Bishop Thomas McMahon and was accompanied by her Mum and her Gran, her classteacher, Miss N Peake, and myself. We were all proud of her and delighted for her! Congratulations and well done, Stephanie! (The trophy with which Stephanie was presented is to be known as the Mercy Award. With the blessings of the Sisters of Mercy it will be re-presented each year to a pupil or group of pupils of the school for their good citizenship).
