What Is Culture?

Culture can be described as the total way of life of any particular group of people. Cultures are composed of many things that unify the group and make it recognizable.

In looking at a culture, children can become aware of such things as its: values, norms, beliefs, religion, social structure, customs, traditions, race, language, art, architecture, work, clothing, food, music, location and history.

Still, it is important to see that a culture is more than its parts. Children should begin to see that the inter-relationship of all aspects of a culture are what makes it live.

In today's global community, there is little or no chance for a culture to exist by itself. Cultures live together and the contact between cultures often leads to conflict when there is a lack of awareness, tolerance, respect and understanding.

Culture is a powerful unifying force. Still, in today's world, culture may become harmful: if it stops us from looking at things in new ways; if it prevents us from asking certain questions; or if it dictates that only one way; of thought or belief is right
