In This Issue: We meet some of the children of Røvær. Their introductions are brief but we must remember that these youngsters are not English speaking. Their mother tongue is Norwegian. So, their first attempt to communicate in English is remarkable. Shortly, The children of Røvær will begin to introduce us to the Norwegian Culture and we will be able to see through their eyes the similarities and differences that exist between their culture and ours no matter where we live. For a real treat, we have a Quicktime VR movie of Røvær that allows us to stand on the island and look all around us. See if you can make it move. Its easy. Just put the cursor in the picture and move the mouse. From Norway, its off to the far side of Canada for a beginning glimpse into an aboriginal culture, the Coast Salish Peoples. Enjoy!

Norway and Its Culture
Hi! I come from Norway. Norway is a very beautiful country in the north of Europe. Norway has many mountains and a long coast. There are about 4.6
million inhabitants in Norway. The capital, Oslo, is the biggest city in Norway. We have a King and a Queen. Norway has 19 counties.
In 1994 we had the winter olympic games in Lillehammer. Usually, Norwegians do it quite well in skiing. We often get medals. If you come to Norway you must check out a beautiful island called
Røvær. This island is located on the westcoast of Norway. by Silje, 12 years old
My name is Maria. I am 12 years old, and I live in Norway. The capital of Norway is Oslo. Oslo is the biggest city in Norway with about 4.6 million inhabitants. Apart from us Norwegians there are Sami people. They are living in the north of Norway. Our country benefits by oil and fish. One of the great pleasures Norwegians and tourists enjoy, is the Vigelandspark. There you can see a lot of statues made by Gustav Vigeland. We have a King and a Queen, not a president. by Maria, 12 years old

Who Is Kurt Nilsen?
Kurt Nilsen
is 24 years old and he is Norway's biggest Idol.
It was in May, earlier this year, that he got the final proof that he was an Idol with a capital I. Half a million cheering Norwegians forgot about the telephone-bill for a while and threw their votes in the air for the plumber from Bergen, Norway's second largest city. Those votes made him the winner he deserved to be, although it was with a small margin. TV2, Norway’s leading commercial TV-channel had witnessed an enormous success.
Through harsh qualifications, thorough examinations by a strict, but fair jury, excruciating semi-finals and a fantastic final, viewed by nearly one and a half million excited Norwegians, Kurt emerged as the winner. He had been hailed as the favorite and he kept his cool.

Herring Fisheries
About a hundred years ago, every year during the fishing season, nearly 15,000 fishermen came to the island of Røvær, which is only 1.4 square km. It's really difficult to imagine, but it is true! All the fishermen were fishing for herring.
Røvær was a well- known fishing station. Buyers came from all over Norway, bringing barrels and salt with them. Women from Røvær were working hard during the season; gutting the herring. After the herring was salted in barrels, it was sold to wholesalers and dealers.
The herring is called silde "the silver of the sea" here in Norway, because the herring is silvercoloured and people made big money on it.

Spirit Power
The Coast Salish life centered around spirit power. The rocks, animals, ocean and trees were a big part of the Coast Salish life. The Coast Salish were haunted and helped by guardian spirits. Each spirit had special powers. Each person would make friends with the spirits by performing acts. For example, a clam digger spoke to the clam spirit before collecting.
Boys were left alone in the woods close to the forest spirit. They listened and looked and waited for power. The boy would keep his power a secret and announce it at a potlatch. The Coast Salish shared their environment with the animals. They had great respect for their own habitat. Here is a Salish marriage prayer.
Salish Marriage Prayer
Now for you there is no rain, for one is shelter to the other. Now for you there is no sun, for one is shelter to the other. Now for you nothing is hard and bad, for the hardness and badness is taken by one for the other. Now there is no night, for one is light to the other. Now for you the snow has ended always, for one is protection for the other. It is that way from now on. Now it is good and there is always food, and now there is always drink, and now there is always comfort. Now forever, there is no loneliness.
