U13 Boys 2007 so far
We have had an encouraging start to the hockey in 2007.

The House Indoor Competition has been keenly contested with boys and girls becoming increasingly aware of what is called for in this exciting format of hockey: lots of running, vision, accurate passing, and solid tackling. Results from the first two rounds indicate that Lund are currently ‘the team to beat’.

Coates 2 Montagu 4 (MVP Georgia Hirst)
Gadney 1 Lund 4 (MVP Lucy Milbourn)
Coates 1 Lund 9 (MVP Thomas Lush)
Montagu 4 Gadney 3 (MVP Will Leigh-Bramwell)

Placings (after two rounds): 1 = Lund and Montagu, 3 Coates, 4 Gadney.

The Foremarke Hall Tournament always provides our senior players with a stiff early assignment. With the youngest team (6 of the squad U12, of whom 4 were U11) we performed most encouragingly.

Bromsgrove 2 Malsis 0
Foremarke Hall 1 Malsis 1
Old Buckenham Hall 4 Malsis 1
Kimbolton 1 Malsis 1

We were competitive throughout each game; indeed we dominated much of the game against Bromsgrove and scored in overtime to earn a much deserved draw against Foremarke - a short corner, the last hit of the game. Old Buckenham Hall were a quality team who took their chances and put us under great pressure, but we had rocked them with a fine goal after only seconds and gave them plenty to defend. Once again we came from behind in our play-off game against Kimbolton. At the end of the afternoon we also the compliments paid our boys by the umpires and organisers of the tournament.

Hall Cross is one of the few maintained schools in Yorkshire to really promote hockey - indeed they have a fine tradition and a close liaison with Doncaster Hockey Club. Our Under 12 team played well and defeated (4-1) a team that contained five players who had reached the National U11 finals last year with Doncaster. Goals from Jordan, Lush and Robinson kept us ahead on the scoreboard, but good teamwork, high work rate and determined defence were the key factors. The Under 13 team (5-4) took their lead from their ever-present captain, Will Leigh-Bramwell, and went ahead with two well-taken goals from Ryan Wells. Declan Walkden made some top saves in goal and all showed great support for each other and a willingness to ignore the hail. Hall Cross fought back to make it 4-4, but we scored with two minutes to go - no more than we deserved.

Lots to look forward to.

Stop Press: Lund were victorious in the final of the Indoor Competition, defeating Montagu in an exciting final. Coates retained their third place with victory over Gadney (MVP’s: Lund - Ryan Wells; Montagu - Charlie Austin; Coates - James Holdsworth; Gadney - Toby Waring).
It has been a building season after losing key members of a special squad last year but many players have stepped up to the mark. James Healey has been a dogged and brave right back and Oliver Schofield has had an immense season at right wing. Rasit Abrol and Charlie Pilkington have been spectacular throughout . The keepers have all gown in stature and Jon Wells has discovered his talents. The likes of young Tom Lush hold promise for Malsis with two more years to play senior hockey and already very comfortable at this level. They have worked as a unit and have become fine players. Thanks go to the parents who have supported us in the foulest of weathers and remained enthusiastic.

Final words must go to Charlie Pilkington, captain: “ It has been a building season, there is more to come. The high point was Milllfield where we put in a gutsy performance against the top schools in the country.”
U13 Girls 2006
The girls have had an amazing season and have not lost a single match! They are an exceptionally talented group of athletes lead by head girl, Emily Taylor, recently selected for the North Yorkshire side and surely the most gifted player any school could wish for. She is a selfless leader and could easily have scored twice her tally of 19 goals had she any concern for self glory. Her side kick, the feisty and competitive Emily Wellock makes them a double act of formidable proportions.

Lucy Milbourn and Georgia Hirst have developed over the season into key players while Jennifer Slack at the back has been brave and reliable throughout. Our corners have been devastating and feared throughout the land.We have scored 28 goals and conceded 6 and have received compliments from other schools wherever we go as to the great hockey we play.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR ……….EMILY TAYLOR
A gifted and special player, top goal scorer and selfless leader. She dominates every game she plays and has a glittering career ahead of her.

MOST IMPROVED…………..LUCY MILBOURN
Lucy has grown in confidence over the season , she began to believe in herself after scoring a hat trick at Stoney hurst and has become a key player.

MOST DETERMINED…………..EMILY WELLOCK
She is a ferocious competitor, a real fighter who never gives up and plays with passion and fire.

COACH'S AWARD………………JENNIFER SLACK
She is an ambassador for the school in every sense of the word, a great team member, brave defender and has had a super season.
U12 Girls 2006
This team have had a more mixed season but are prolific goal scorers. There has been a large variety of players representing this side and solid teamwork has been their main asset. The highlight was definitely beating Stonyhurst 6-0 on the aqua turf when Lucy Milbourn scored a brilliant hat trick and Jacey Raswsthorne had to be taken off as her corner strikes were too scary.

They are a tough bunch and many is the time when they have gone down a goal or two only to turn the game around and win it. Many of these girls will be key 1st team members next season.

“My favourite part of the hockey season so far was when we went to Ben Rhydding Hockey Club for a workshop. I like playing in defence because that's the position I'm best at and I learnt a lot about it.”
Helena Brook aged 11

“I love playing right midfield because you can attack as well as defend and dribble it down the sides.”
Emma Rogers aged 11

"We have not lost at all this season but our toughest match was against Ampleforth because they had a girl with a really scary hit, we still won though."
Emily Wellock aged 12

“ My best hockey memory is when we went to play on the aqua turf at Stonyhurst and I scored a hat-trick. Hockey is really good at Malsis because we play lots of matches, we have a good team, we have our own astro turf and everyone knows us. “
