Each Public School sets its own papers, which are very much harder than Common Entrance.

SEX EDUCATION
Whilst we believe this is the responsibility of the parents, at school the children are taught about human and animal reproduction within the biology syllabus. In addition the girls receive some instruction and ‘question time’ when they are ready. Too early specific sex instruction can be harmful and parents should be circumspect. Recommended further reading for older girls: ‘Girl Talk’ by Lucienne Pickering. For boys ‘Boys Talk’ by Lucienne Pickering.

SHOES
Please see that shoes fit and are in good repair at the start of term. Boots are unsuitable. Shoes should be low-heeled black walking shoes or sandals (lace-up or buckle). No fashion shoes, which will not lace up. All shoes must be named.

Many children bring back some form of cuddly toy. (Please restrict the number and size and please ensure all toys are named). Valuable toys should not be brought back.

TELEPHONE
Children may ‘phone home during their free time using a telephone card. The telephone does not take incoming calls. Parents who live abroad may ‘phone in to arrange a time with us so that we can make sure your child is waiting /to take your call on the school line.

TELEVISION
Watching is restricted for boarders and parents of day pupils are urged to do likewise.

TENNIS
Tennis coaching is offered by a professional coach as an extra. Please do not buy full sized rackets. Suitable ones at sensible prices can be obtained through the school. Own tennis whites (including white socks) are useful for children who like to play in matches. All children timetabled for tennis coaching must own their own racket.

THREE PEAKS WALK
Near the end of the summer term children, parents and friends gather at Horton in Ribblesdale on Sunday afternoon and camp there prior to attacking Ingleborough, Penyghent and Whernside on the Monday. A back-up team, complete either with walkie-talkies or refreshments for the checkpoints, is required and in the past parents have provided much appreciated assistance. Children under 11 years old at the start of the Summer term must be accompanied by a parent.

The school provides shampoo and conditioner. Please discourage your child from bringing back unnecessary lotions and potions. Spray deodorants are not allowed.

VISITING WEEKENDS
These are designed to provide a rest, an objective which is defeated if parents are conned into allowing children to stay up for the ‘Midnight Movie’ (but honestly, Mum, everyone else does!)

Only in exceptional circumstances are children allowed out on non-visiting weekends.

It is a great help if boarders keep wash-things and night attire at home to obviate the need to pack for visiting weekends.

If you want your child to come back earlier than the time stated, please let us know beforehand, so we can arrange for a member of staff to be in the school.
‘W’ is for
