Award Winning Games
Awards. Everyone likes to win one, and it seems more than ever that everyone likes to give one. Oscars, Emmies, Baftas... and the games industry is no different.
In January we'll be giving you the chance to vote for your favourite games of 2004 in our very own Fan Boy Three awards. Which game do you think deserves a Fanny?

Spiele des Jahres
Each year at the Spiele game fair at Essen, one game is awarded the covetted title of Spiele des Jahres (Game of the Year). With the Germans being such avid gameplayers, this award is hotly fought over by the worlds top manufacturers.
Winning the Spiele des Jahres is usually a pretty good sign of quality. Only occasionally do the Spielefreaks who follow the German boardgaming scene consider that the jury got it wrong - like when Villa Palettti trumped the excellent Puerto Rico back in 2002.

Deutsche Spiele Pries
It's interesting to compare how the critics voted with the Spiele Pries results voted for by the German people themselves. No surprise loss for Puerto Rico in this line up, showing that the German public knows a good game when they see one.

Super As d'Or

The French have their own awards ceremony. The Cannes Film Festival isn't the only prestigious event that Cannes can do; every year they hold the Festival International des Jeux.

Origins Awards
Every year there are also Origins awards in almost a dozen boardgaming categories. But the fact that none of the Spiele winners ever get a look in, in a field that is traditionally dominated by Cheapass, Looney Labs and the latest Hasbro releases is considered something of a travesty by most serious Spielefreaks. Consider this list my top picks of the best of the dozen or so award winners that year.
