There was something lurking at the threshold of the Fantasy Flight booth at this year's GAMA trade show (and it wasn't Anders or Christian!) Building on the experience designing their award winning Game of Thrones CCG, the folk at FFG were about to summon Big C into the cardgaming arena (beat that one Yugi!) After the success of Mythos in the early nineties we're expecting big things for everyone's favourite Thing That Should Not Be; this time out he's summoned some big name artists to back him up.
Ia, Ia Cthulhu Ftagn: First off it's important to point out that it's nothing like Mythos. Build decks of intrepid investigators, minions of the mythos or a combination of the two. Draining your home base allows you to play a character, support card or event; during play characters can wind up exhausted or even insane (face down) as they compete in the four arenas of Terror, Combat, Arcane and Investigation to solve Story cards.
How You Win: A seperate 10 card Story Deck (available in each starter) is the key to the action. (This is a common CCG mechanic this year, also cropping up in AEG's Spycraft CCG). Winning five successes in three face up Story cards wins the game.
Deck Archetypes: Too early to say. The Syndicate, agency and Miskatonic University are the three Investigator factions in the initial release, competing against the minions of Cthulhu, Hastur, Yog-Sothoth and Shub Niggurath.
Organised Play: Keep watching this space.
