When the Lord of the Rings TCG launched a few weeks before the first movie, Decipher were masters of the licensed card game property at the height of their powers. But three years and nine expansions later, we'll have to see whether Lord of the Rings can maintain momentum without an annual movie to sustain it.
Mechanics: Construct your fantasy Fellowship out of Elf, Dwarf, Gandalf, Gondor, Hobbit and Rohirrim cards, and try and protect your Ringbearer as they progress along a nine location site path. But beware the forces of shadow; every action puts tokens into a pool that allows your opponent to play Saurons minions against you every step of the way. Decks consist of equal numbers of Fellowship and Shadow cards, so you're always in the game even if its your opponents turn.
How You Win: It's a race to site nine - whoever clears the last site first wins the game. Of course, Sauron will have something to say about that; if your Ringbearer is killed or corrupted en route, it's crispy bacon time!
Deck Archetypes: Corsairs, Nazgul/Orc and Moria archery decks are all popular shadow choices, while Elf/Gondor combo decks using Dauntless Hunter, Gandalf telepathy decks and Dwarf decks featuring Gimli, Bearer of Grudges (from Reflections) as Ringbearer are frequent fellowship foundations.
Organised Play: Race to Mount Doom every Friday night, pre-releases and more. Follow this link for more details.

Roleplaying Plug: Their experiences in license management saw Decipher snaffle the LoTR RPG rights as well. But the tortoise slow release schedule saw them fumble what should've been the greatest RPG cash cow in living memory. Shame. Don't forget to check out the LoTR TMG from Sabertooth or the tabletop game from Games Workshop too.
