In this age of One Ring ruling them all at the box office it's easy to forget that Five Rings have been consistantly dominating the Organised Play scene for almost a decade. Legend of the Five Rings debuted back in '95, but it wasn't until '97 that gamers really stood up and took notice. The Day of Thunder tournament didn't just chuck up a winning cardflopper; the players were given the chance to decide the fate of Rokugan, a format AEG has stuck by ever since. Almost every tournament played for L5R decides some crucial Clan related crisis, giving Five Rings players unparalleled control over every aspect of the story.
Mechanics: Players have two decks - Fate and Dynasty. Dynasty cards produce gold, which allow you to 'hire' samurai, shugenjas (wizards), courtiers and undead Shadowlands abominations. These then protect your provionces from attack.
How You Win: It's not all fighting. Aside from a straight military victory you can set out to win by being more honourable than your opponent, earning points through flashy duels like you see in chambara epics. There's even an option to seek enlightenment (though it's not recommended for the novice).
Deck Archetypes: There are ten main factions, including backstabbing Scorpions, magically gifted Phoenix, Lion tactictians and the honourless swarms of the Shadowlands.
Organised Play: Every Tuesday at Fan Boy Three, with regular monthly tournaments that attract players from all over the UK. L5R Organised Play is like that. But the downside is L5R is one of the most complicated CCG's around.
