Warlord CCG

Sneak Attack

Campaign Edition

Southern Kingdoms

Hot on the heels of Third Edition D&D came the unlikeliest tie in product of all. Warlord was a D20 powered card game that took familiar concepts like level, feats and D&D spells and turned them into a fantastic CCG. It's shtick was 'the game you already know how to play', and it worked. Here was a cardgame even avid roleplayers could pick up and learn, and the D20 used to resolve combat throws in a nice element of randomness that keeps even the most jaded player on their toes. Building on the success of Warlord, two years ago AEG launched their Overlord Attack promotions, which see a player who beats an Overlord deck get to keep it as booty. Winning an Overlord deck acts as a buy in to play against the Dragonlord at major tournaments, so they're well worth winning.

Mechanics: Add your attack bonus to a D20 roll and try and hit your opponent's Armour Class. It really is that simple. Each player has one 50+ card deck of characters, items and events. Each turn roll a D20 for initiative, then take actions one player at a time until nobody can play or activate a card.

How You Win: Kill your opponents Warlord. Southern Kingdoms added in a new victory condition or two into the mix. But the first Warlord to take a dirt nap usually still loses.

Deck Archetypes: Elven Behlial card drawing decks were dominating play before the revision into the new Campaign Edition format. Card drawing is always a powerful mechanic. (My own pre CE deck used Sorcha/Monster Rancher to draw multiple Jackals of Mourn, and then keep them permanently in play). Campaign has levelled the field a bit, and returned Warlord to its roots. So expect to see big Krun decks and speed Rathe decks in competitive play.

Organised Play: Every Wednesday night, plus frequent weekend tournaments and pre-releases. We've been actively supporting Warlord since my time in Nottingham, so expect some pretty fierce competitive play at the major events.

Website: AEG run the official Warlord CCG website, but the hottest place on the net is the Temple of Lore (it even has it's own card!). And for strictly UK based Warlord action, check out the appropriately named Warlord-UK.
