Move aside Yugi, here comes Shobu - another loud mouthed manga kid with a deck of cards, an attitude and hair that looks like he's gone five rounds with Pikachu before falling in a vat of hair gel. Only Shobu's hair is black. Not like Yugi's hair at all. Yugi's hair is yellow. Based on the Duelmasters TV series, which in turn was based on the anime, which in it's turn was actually based on Magic the Gathering. Only in Shobu's world, the Serra Angels, Chaos Orbs and Masticores are actually summoned by playing cards (just like the Reverend David Brown always claimed might happen in real life). Then they fight. What did you expect: that they'd organise a bake sale and make cookies?
Mechanics: Each turn you play a colour resource into your Mana area, which in turn can be used to play critters from your hand. Cards played to your Mana zone stick around even after summoning, so by turn five you'll be fielding all but the largest bad boys. Both Mana and critters come in five varieties of colours - yellow (light), dark, green (nature), blue (water) and red (fire). After a spell of summoning sickness, your creatures attack each other and compare attack ratings with defence ratings to see which wins.
How You Win: Each player has five face down shield cards. If you can't defend with a monster, your opponent can attack a shield; once all five are destroyed it's game over, man! But watch out; shield cards may contain powerful Spell Triggers that can flip the game in an instant.
Deck Archetypes: Yellow are strong blockers, with Red the strongest attack. Like Magic, Green is full of big creatures and Mana management, Blue is full of subtle tricks and Black is the master of destruction. Most decks field two colours; unlike Magic, this is one game where mono-colour is at a serious disadvantage.
Organised Play: Like they say in the funny pages, "learn to Duel or be a fool". Check out our regular Sunday tournaments.
