Decipher in U-Turn Shock
|
In an uncharacteristic move, US card supremo's Decipher have relaxed the stock level restrictions to qualify for Platinum retailer status. Despite the success of Lord of the Rings, retailers had complained that Beyblades, Hack and the new Megaman CCG were at least two Manga licences too far for the Virginia based card company.
Still, it's not all (Mount) doom and gloom in the Decipher camp. In a radical departure from their licenced tie-in origins, the new Wars TCG takes the old Star Wars mechanic and puts it in all all new proprietory universe. Originally entitled Muomin Wars, the thought of those little pink hippo creatures fighting each other in a galaxy far far away was apparently putting some potential customers off. No moomins made the cut into the new look card art, but advance copies look absolutely gorgeous. Will Wars save Decipher or be the final nail in its coffin? Only you can decide.
But we think it might just be a massive hit.

Games Workshop Deny LoTR RPG Rumour
|
A spokesman from top British figure company Games Workshop categorically denied that the company was working on a Lord of the Rings RPG to go with their fantasy battles and collectible miniatures licence. Although many long term roleplayers blame Workshop for turning its back on the hobby during the 1980's, the company has recently had a damascene conversion and announced it was clawing back the licence for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and it's Black Library staff were hard at work on a 40K and several un-named licenced properties too.
So Rogue Trader looks like only being twenty years late - can Cyberpunk 3.0 beat this long standing record we ask?
Of course, in the world of licenced properties, deniability is king. But it *is* suspicious that the GW policy change struck at exactly the time Decipher announced they were pulling out of the roleplaying business and canning the remaining LoTR RPG manuscripts. Coincidence? We think not.
One thing is certain - Workshop have announced that they are working with US publishing house Green Ronin to bring the full range of RPG titles to the shelves. Will Rings be one of them? We think so.

Pirates Pulled on International Release Date Scandal
|
Wizkids hot collectible strategy game Pirates of the Spanish Main was pulled from International distribution on the day of release. Distributors, retailers and customers were literally left in the dark after Wizkids discovered demand in the US far exceeded supply. But the piratical madness gets even crazier.
With the first printing sold out in the US, attendees at GenCon Indy were dismayed to find they could only buy three of the much sought after boosters - nowhere near enough to play in WizKids own highly publicised auction event. "This is the Galactus fiasco all over again" said one astonished punter who asked to remain nameless (but was wearing an eye patch and sporting a particularly lively parrot).
