Ten years ago, with all the main genres taken by the gaming industry big boys, the samurai and cowboy games were ripe for reinvention. Taking the central premise of samurai, ninja and magic using shugenja and combining the clan oriented archetypes of Vampire with the existential horror of Cthulhu gave a post-modern twist on the code of Bushido. Deadlands may be dead and buried up at boot hill, but thanks to a perennially successful card game and a fascinating setting that's still keeping its secrets after ten years gaming, L5R is still a driving force in gaming. So a bit like the Mitshubshi Shogun of rolpelaying games really.
