SUMMER'S EVENING CONCERT AT THE MONASTERY
|
Gorton Monastery plays host to a wonderful summer's evening of music on Saturday 20th June at 7.30 pm when St George's Singers present a concert of choral music entitled In a Monastery Garden.
In celebration of the restoration of the Monastery's garden, the concert will feature a delightful 'pot pourri' of traditional English folk songs, madrigals, and choral works with a distinctly floral theme. Amongst the works will be Sprig of Thyme by John Rutter, Brigg Fair by Percy Grainger, Five Flower Songs by Benjamin Britten, and Les Chansons des Roses (Rose Songs) by Morten Lauridsen. And since no concert in a monastic garden would be complete without it, St George's Singers' Musical Director Neil Taylor and their Accompanist Jeffrey Makinson will be playing a duet version of the famous In a Monastery Garden and Grainger’s Country Gardens.
As part of their Celebration of Youth season, St George's Singers are delighted that they will be joined by choirs from Poynton High School and Cedar Mount High School, together with Cedar Mount's steel pans band. In addition to entertaining the audience with songs from their own repertoire, the youngsters will also be joining St George's Singers in the premiere of a work specially commissioned for the concert from Matthew Hamilton, St George's Singers' Assistant Musical Director.
To make this a perfect summer's evening entertainment, refreshments including strawberries and wine are included in the price.
The concert is once again being given in aid of the ongoing restoration of the Monastery, which still requires £1 million to complete refurbishment. St George's Singers' two previous concerts at the Monastery have raised funds towards the completion of the car park, and it is hoped that this concert will be just as successful.
