Our Town

Paisley grew from a small village on the west bank of the River White Cart in the early middle ages to a Royal Burgh in 1488 and one of Scotland's most important towns by the nineteenth century.

Its early name, Passelat, might come from the Latin word, basilicum, meaning a church, since the town had a chapel founded by its patron saint, St Mirin, from the sixth century.

The people of Paisley have traditionally been known as 'buddies', a corruption of the word, body, and called their football team, one of the first in Scotland, St Mirren. The town expanded to the east banks of the river when a new town was built to house the famous Paisley weavers.

Streets were named after the fabrics and materials they used, Gauze, Silk, Lawn, Cotton and others. Paisley's Technical College had such a fine reputation that it was some years ago designated a University.
