The pupils of class 2 Green, in Doha, Qatar planted their palm tree on the 1st December as part of the Spirit of the Trees 2012 project. This coincided with their link school St Mary's , Folkestone, England planting their 3 Silver Birch trees. Both of these schools have been working together since September, along with Year 2 classes in Dundee High in Scotland, Litton School in Derbyshire, St Ursula's in Bristol and a school in Northern Ireland. All of these school are hoping to plant trees during this academic year.
A representative from the British Council in Qatar,along with staff
from the school,attended the Tree Planting ceremony at Al Rafaa
Independent Girls School in Doha.

They are particulalry interested in the 2012 Games as the Asian Olympics are being held in Qatar in December 2006 and the facilities for these games are already being built. Pupils from the school may also be participating in the welcome ceremony.


Watering cans were definitly needed, as although it
was December the temperature was still 28c.

The pupils from 2 Green Class read out their script in English.

Pupils from the age of 5 have all their lessons (except for Arabic and Islamic studies) in English. The pupils have also been writing about trees and drawing pictures.
They will be publishing some of their work on Schoolnet Global.

The Kentish Express reports " Three Silver Birches have been planted at St Mary's Primary School in Folkestone in celebration of the International Dimension there and the 2012 Olympic Games success.
It has been honoured with an award for its work in encouraging all members of the school to converse via e-mail and video conferencing with young people around the world.
pupils are now in regular contact with friends in America, Canada, France, Qatar, Germany and Australia'

Pupils from each of the classes came to particpate in the planting ceremony, holding flags from the countries they link with and green balloons, which were left to fly away at the end.
Year 2 Planets Class, stand behind the newly planted birch trees with white ribbons round them, for a photo to send to 2 Green in Qatar. They can see the trees from their classroom and keep an eye on them.
They are looking for signs of the first buds to be ready to open.
A year 6 boy plants the first of the trees, having helped dig the large holes that were needed.

The Folkestone Herald newspaper wrote
" An International tree planting project, designed to reflect the Spirit of the 2012 London Olympics was launched at St Mary's Church of England Primary School Folkestone, this week.
Three silver birches were donated by McFarlane's Nursery at Swingfield and renowned poet Philip Wells, who took part in the Folkestone Literary Festival, recited a rap specially written for the project.

The 'Spirit of the Trees 2012' project will see 2012 schools around the world plant one or more trees as a symbol of unity, collaboration and friendship.

Work linked to the project will be published online on www.schoolnetglobal.com run by Intuitive Media, with schools encouraged to take pictures and record their planting.'
