Planting Trees in Finland and Italy
|
Pupils from schools in Finland, the magical land of lakes and trees, with snow, frozen lakes and seas in the winter tell us about their planting of new saplings.
They also tell us about centuries old customs that they still participate in, linked to trees.
The pupils from warm, sunny Italy should have been planting traditional 'Olive Trees' as part of their Spirit of the Trees 2012 project, but it was too cold during the Spring of 2006, so they have postponed the planting until next year. Instead they tell us about their biennual tree planting.
Since the 1970's, pupils from Scuola Elementare G. Verdi - Salorno (IC Bassa Atesina) Italy, go into their natural park of 'Monto Corno' and plant a lot of young pines and firs, so that their woods will continue living....they are helped by pupils from their link school in Germany along with their teachers, the rangers, the mayor and the local council members.

Finnish Tree Customs and Traditions
|
The Pupils and teacher from Kantokasken School tell us about their customs.
"During the Spring time we have visited in the wood near to school.
We have there one pine tree for sacrifice like old Finnish people.
Children have made gifts from clay for the tree, aeolian wind harps and before first of May, they made clay things of sorrow, joy and hope and took them to the tree.
On Maundy Thursday we walk to this tree and drive away bad spirits with decorated branches. We have taken many photos of all this.
