Trees & Customs across the Seasons from Romania

Unirea National College can be found in South Eastern Romania and is where
friends Claudia Slujitoru and Daniela Joghui both teach. The students are 14-18 year olds and participate in many International Projects using ICT as one of the many ways of communicating. Their projects include work with schools in the Philippines, Finland, Spain and the UK. Daniela has taken most of the photos for this Tree project, and gives us a glimpse into their ancient customs and their beautiful country.

Cherry and Birch trees are used in CUSTOMS from THE APUSENI MOUNTAINS of Romania
Traditions and customs are very much kept alive in Transylvania. This especially in regions where people live close to nature as in the Apuseni Mountains. Old rites survived for centuries. Even a lot of pagan rites did survive. Some were transformed or adopted as Christian rites. Some of these customs became a local festival, some are limited to the family or a group of people. Some are just part of daily life.
Some of these customs should improve health and prosperity, others are to keep demons wild animals and misfortune away.
Symbols as the sun, the rope, grapes, bark or wine leaves are used in sculptures.

Birch Bark is used for making Masks!
On the 23rd of April there is a very strange and very
old pagan celebration in Buru.

The celebration of “Babaluda” . It’s a fertility (and the beginning of spring) celebration on the day of the Saint Gheorghe .
What exactly happens is that 6 young man from the village are wearing masks or are dressed in a special way. They choose for a couple: Babaluda and his wife -so 1 man is dressed as a female-).
Babaluda and his wife are completely covered or better dressed with the bark of a cherry tree and leaves and branches of the birch tree.
The other 4: 2 are dressed as soldiers and and protect
Babaluda and his wife.

Spring is on it's way in the grounds of this block of flats.
Watch how the feeling of the flats changes as the
seasons of the year pass by.

Springtime and blossom in the beautiful Romanian Countryside.
It looks so quiet and peaceful.

Spring moves onto Summer at the same block of flats, but it looks and feels so different!

In the countryside everything is green and lush in the Summer sunshine.

The leaves are falling as Autumn and the promise of colder days and nights arrives at these flats.

A Winter wonderland has appeared over night and transformed the flats into an area of quiet beauty. The magic of the first snow of winter.
