The Role of an Educational Psychologist
Each Educational Psychologist is responsible for a "cluster" (group of schools). The Educational Psychologist also works with schools and establishments in other authorities, for children/young people from South Ayrshire in external, day or residential placements.

They visit each school regularly to consult about the children/young people who they are involved with and discuss any new issues. They may carry out assessment such as classroom observation to see how the child or young person is getting on.

They will meet with many different people including parents/carers, head teachers, pupil support co-ordinators, behaviour and learning support teachers, guidance staff, support staff, social workers, health professionals, and other people involved in caring for the child/young person.

They also continually update their knowledge and skills by doing extra training, and offer training to school staff and other professionals to help them support the children/young people in their care. E.g. they might provide whole school training on topics related to achievement and inclusion, or they might support the school leadership team to bring about organisational change. They can support school self evaluation and improvement, carry out development work, be involved in school based projects, support the development of policies and support parents/carers.
