Educational Psychologists believe that problems and solutions come from interactions between children/young people and the context they are working in e.g. their learning abilities, the environment in which they live and learn, the curriculum oportunities they are given, and the expectations of friends, school staff and families.
Ways of improving situations can often be found when changes are made to the context to remove any barriers to learning and progress. Educational Psychologists apply psychology to bring about positive changes and remove barriers to learning and progress.
Educational Psychologists are skilled in assessing children in context. Assessment can help to identify a child's strengths and weaknesses and most importantly, identify barriers to progress.
The Educational Psychologist will decide which method of assessment is the best for each situation. These assessments range from problem solving conversations with teachers, to trying out new interventions or carrying out tests.
An Educational Psychologist will never discuss or see a child without the permission of the parent/carer. Parents/carers should be fully involved and understand what is happening and how they can help.
