Big Developments in Reading and Writing
Big Developments in Reading and Writing
Lots of excellent work is being done in school at the moment on reading and writing. Staff have been working very hard on some new approaches and ideas for reading and writing. This all started in August, on our very first day back when we had a visit from Anne Glennie (a teacher from the island of Lewis). Anne came to share her ideas and expertise in BIG WRITING with us and we started to implement this new programme of writing.
The big question is, “Is the new approach working?”
Answer:- Yes it certainly seems to be, especially when the pupils are asking, “Can we do our writing again today, because it was great?” The fact that pupils seem to be enjoying their writing more is definitely a step in the right direction!!
We are also developing clear links between reading and writing and you too might be seeing evidence of this when your children ask you how to spell a word so that they can use it in their writing. I got caught out in this myself when I was doing art with P6/7 and said that their tables had to be immaculate when they were finished, at which point about ten children chorused, “How do you spell that and dived for their pencils to write it down. We are also planning our first Hallside Book Week -lots of activities centred around books, book themed activities and lots of reading and writing activities. Planning is well under way and we’re hoping for some real book fun that week.
Pupils from Hallside Primary Win 2 Oscars!
Pupils from Hallside Primary Win 2 Oscars!
The pupils of P6/7 and Mrs Maxwell recently took part in creating a short film for the Cambuslang and Rutherglen Film Festival. They worked closely with a film producer from Access Media Productions to create a road safety documentary, that included facts and figures, reports on road safety and a short drama piece on the potential dangers of crossing the road. Pupils took part in writing and developing the script, delivering pieces to camera, filming, capturing sound, effective lighting and, of course, acting. The project offered pupils a wide range of experiences and developed their transferrable skills, all of which fits perfectly with curriculum for excellence. All the films submitted were judged and the Hallside film won two awards. It won Best Documentary and Best Overall Film. The school was issued with two Oscar statuettes that now take pride of place in the school trophy cabinet. Well done. We hope to show the documentary at the forthcoming parents’ night.
