Additional Support for Learning Needs
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR LEARNING NEEDS

The school has a policy of flexible support to respond to the changing needs of pupils. Many children during the course of their education, experience problems with some aspect of the work. Those may be a very specific problem with an identifiable solution. There may be a more general difficulty in some area of work which requires more general support. Or it may be that a child has a particular aptitude or ability and that teaching staff need to develop materials and adapt their programme to ensure they are fully stretched.

Parental support and involvement is valued in this work and the school undertakes to report back to parents formally and informally on a regular basis and to respond to the initiatives taken by parents.

Hallside School is part of the South Lanarkshire early intervention programme which sets out to give children particularly P1 and P2 additional support gaining the skills of literacy and numeracy in the first two years of formal education. The school has committed its own resources to support the additional help provided by the local authority. This is part of a pattern of learning support which offers help and support at all stages from P1-P7.

Children will be in different groups for maths and language where the strategy of setting (team teaching) is carefully deployed to optimise the amount of relevant teacher time devoted to each pupil. Composition of groups is reviewed and altered regularly throughout the session.
