Transfer from Primary to Secondary.
TRANSFER FROM PRIMARY TO SECONDARY SCHOOL

Pupils normally transfer from primary to secondary school between the ages of 11½ or 12½, so that they will have the opportunity to complete at least 4 years of secondary education. Arrangements are made by the school to transfer children to the associated secondary school as determined by their home address. Parents of P7 children will be informed of the transfer arrangements made for their child to attend secondary school.

Further information on primary/secondary liaison transition arrangements made prior to your child attending secondary school will also be provided.

The process of making choices starts early in the P7 year when the staff of the local secondary school visit P7 parents in class and begin to get to know them. Meetings and visits to the secondary school are arranged starting in October/November so that parents of P7 children have the opportunity to ask questions and satisfy themselves they are making the right choice of school. Guidance staff from the secondary school visit P7 classes on a number of occasions to work with the children and liase with primary teaching colleagues so that they know the strengths and weaknesses of each child. Through these visits an information profile is built up so the secondary school knows what each child is capable of and continues to provide a balanced appropriate curriculum. The local secondary school creates balanced classes and ensures every Hallside pupil always has at least one friend in their new class when they make the move in August. There are day visits to the secondary school, a mini sports festival and a summer disco all helping to make the P7 pupil look forward to the change of school with anticipation, not anxiety.

First year pupils from Cathkin High School visit the P7 class in Hallside each year to talk frankly about their experiences of secondary education and to answer questions on any subjects the P7’s wish raise. Our pupils find it a re-assuring experience to hear first hand what it is really like.

P7 children also work on a unit prepared by the staff of Cathkin High during their last year in primary school. This work is sent ahead to the secondary school in June to help the staff there assess the abilities of all the pupils who will be coming to them in August.

Further information on prospective visits can be arranged by contacting the Head of Lower School, Cathkin High School, Whitlawburn, Cambuslang. The telephone number is 0141 641 4331.

Normally children attend the school in their local catchment area. However, there are times when parents wish their children to go to other schools. If you want your child to go to another school then you may make what is known as a ‘placing request’. If you live in South Lanarkshire and decide to submit a ‘placing request’, we are unable to reserve a place in your local school until we have made a decision on the ‘placing request’. Please note if your ‘placing request’ application is unsuccessful and all places at your local school are filled you will be offered a place at the next nearest appropriate South Lanarkshire School.

If an application for a ‘placing request’ is made then free school transport is not provided.

If you move outwith your catchment primary school this can affect your right to transfer to the associated high school and a ‘request to remain form’ must be completed. If you require further information, please contact Educational Support Services on 01698 454102.

Forms are available from schools, Q&A offices or by contacting Education Support Services on 01698 454102. Complete forms should be returned as soon as possible to Educational Resources, Support Services, Council Offices, Almada Street, Hamilton ML3 OAA.
