South Lanarkshire Council
SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS
Access to the curriculum for all pupils in St Mary’s Primary School is in line with South Lanarkshire Council’s ‘Accessibility Strategy’. Not all pupils learn at the same pace, and teachers make provision for pupils to work at their own level. As a result of regular assessment, careful classroom organisation enables the teachers to teach pupils in groups and individually when appropriate. Materials are carefully selected to cater for different ability levels. We try to ensure that the interest of the more able pupils is maintained by giving them challenging tasks and extension activities. Less able pupils are given assignments, which are within their capabilities to ensure that they experience a sense of achievement, thus encouraging motivation and steady progress. The school has an allocation of Learning Support from the Clydesdale Support Unit based in St Mary’s School; this allocation is currently one morning and one afternoon per week. The Support for Learning Teacher offers advice to members of staff about the needs of individual
pupils, provides resources and teaches groups of children.

Mrs Weightman, Principal Teacher, co-ordinates Support for Learning within the school, and parents should contact her if they have any concerns about any aspect of their child’s learning. Both Mrs Weightman and the class teacher will liaise with parents should any pupil require specialist help from other agencies (Psychological Services, Social Work Department, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, the Visual Impairment Unit, the Hearing Impairment Unit, etc….)
