The School Curriculum
Pupils at Lochmaben are encouraged to learn through active participation. The school offers a broad, balanced and varied curriculum based around the 6 main curricular areas.

English Language : (Listening, Talking, Reading, Writing)

Mathematics : (Number, Money, Measurement : Shape, Position, Movement
Information Handling : Problem Solving; Mental Calculation)

Environmental Studies : (History, Geography, People in Society,
Science and Technology)

Religious and Moral Education
Personal and Social Development
- These three curricular areas are now linked together.
Health Education

Expressive Arts : (Music, Art & Design, Physical Education, Drama)

: Now permeates all curricular areas


The staff at Lochmaben endorses the advice given in the 5-14 National Guidelines. By providing a curriculum based on the 5-14 ideals we hope our pupils will acquire and develop:-

  • Knowledge, skills and understanding in literacy and communication, numeracy and mathematical thinking.


  • Understanding and appreciation of themselves and other people, and of the world about them.


  • The capacity to make creative and practical use of a variety of media to express feelings and ideas.


  • Knowledge and understanding of religion and its role in shaping society and the development of personal and social values.


  • The capacity for independent thought through enquiry, problem solving, information handling and reasoning.


  • Appreciation of benefits of healthy living and physical fitness.


  • Positive attitudes to learning and personal fulfilment through the achievement of personal objectives.


Curricular areas being reviewed this session are Assessment, Enterprise Education, Transition, Inclusion and Religious aand Moral Education.

The Head Teacher would be happy to discuss these policies with parents/carers.
