Dumfries and Galloway Council Council
Behaviour and Discipline
It is our aim to co-operate with parents in helping our pupils to exercise self-discipline, to be tolerant and caring and to work happily with others. We want Lochmaben Primary School to be a safe, pleasant and happy place to work and learn.

The majority of pupils behave and recognise school rules are necessary :-

(i) for their well-being and safety (ii) for the efficient running of the school

Our school rules are very simple and were drawn up by the pupils themselves.

1. Keep the school and playground tidy and litter free.
2. Behave at all times.
3. Be polite and helpful to visitors and each other.
4. Walk quietly in the corridors.
5. Respect the school’s property and the property of others.
6. Stay in your own part of the playground.

Pupils of P1/3 are awarded smiley faces for a variety of reasons including behaviour, attitude, effort and achievement. Sad faces for negative behaviour. On achieving 30 smiley faces a child receives a bronze certificate. This is repeated until silver and gold certificates have been awarded. Gold certificates are presented at Assembly. If a child goes beyond Gold Level they will receive the Head Teacher’s Special Award.
Pupil’s of P4/7 are awarded gold coins for the same reasons as P1/3. When 5 gold coins have been awarded they reach Bronze Level 1. A further 5 will result in Bronze Level 2 and so on until they have attained Level 1, 2, 3 Bronze, Silver and Gold. Stage 3 of the Gold Level will be presented to the child at Assembly.
There are a variety of other rewards issued to individual pupils to encourage positive behaviour and academic achievement. These may include stickers and Head Teacher Awards.

These systems have proved very successful for promoting positive behaviour. However, if behavioural difficulties do arise, an early referral to parents is made and parents are expected to co-operate in ensuring that the pupil conforms to the high standards set by the school.
A Positive Behaviour Policy is in place at our school. We hope to update the Pupil Code of Conduct next session.

Protecting Children from Abuse
All staff have undertaken training in Protecting Children from Abuse. A policy and procedures specific to Lochmaben Primary School have been drawn up.

Staff and pupils have been working hard to ensure good behaviour in our school. As well as a Positive Behaviour Policy and an Anti-Bullying Policy we have produced two booklets:
1) "Behaviour Matters" for pupils
2) "Behaviour Matters" for parents/carers.
We are are proud of these booklets as we all worked together to produce them.

We believe that all children and young people should experience education of the highest quality, in a secure environment, free from distraction and disturbance and where standards of behaviour and discipline are very high. We believe they should learn in an environment that offers well-judged praise and recognition of achievement: that looks and focuses on their strengths: takes them seriously and shows a genuine interest.
We aim
