Hall of Fame honour for Campanini
The 38-year-old has had his name added to Florida Tech Hall's Sports Hall of Fame while he has recently recognised as a finalist for a Florida award called the "Emerging Leaders 4 under 40 initiative" - a scheme when people want to help their community and they are all under the age of 40. Campanini, who played in three Junior Murattis between 1984 and 1986, sharing the first and winning the other two, is ranked among the top ten all-time players at his former College. The attacking-midfielder helped lead his team to Sunshine State Championships in 1988 and 1989. He also took all SSC honours in three seasons. The Old Victorian is also the only Florida Tech Hall student to win national championships as a player and a coach, the latter in 1991 after staying on for three seasons as assistant coach. Now a father of three, Campanini is a Florida Tech board trustee and a member of the Florida Tech College of Business Board of Overseers. Campanini, an environmentalist, is chief executive officer at a firm of architects, engineers and planners. Story extract form Andy Bradshaw http://www.bbc.co.uk

Ramskill takes Amateur Championship
The final of the 2007 HSBC Jersey Amateur Golf Championship, proved to be a tightly contested affair, between two past winners of the event, Richard Ramskill and 2005 Champion Gavin O'Neil. Champion Richard Ramskill said: "I think the conditions were very trying to say the least out there and very difficult to play good golf which we all would have liked to have seen and certainly I would have liked to have played, but I managed to scrape through in the end." Richard told Channel Online where he thought the battle was won and lost: "Maybe today around the greens chipping and putting, I mean it's always crucial in match play, but more so when the weather's like this, because you're not going to be hitting greens in regulation time after time. So if you can get up and down certainly in these conditions you'll save the odd hole here and there." Extract of story by Sarah Moorhouse http://www5.channelonline.tv

Skydiver takes the plunge again
OV skydiver Michael Holmes who survived a 12,000ft (3.7km) fall has made his first jump since the accident. Michael punctured a lung and broke his ankle after plummeting to the ground at 100mph (160km/h) in Taupo, New Zealand six months ago. The accident, on 6 December, happened when the 25-year-old's parachute became tangled and his reserve chute failed. "It felt a bit alien because I haven't done it for so long," said Mr Holmes after his latest jump. "By the time I was in freefall it was like I'd never left it - it was great," he added. Upton hat-trick for OV Hockey team
OVs 4-2 Columbians: On a scorching hot day the mighty OVs lined up against Guernsey’s Columbians for the third year in a row, with OVs determined to complete their Upton hat-trick over the arch enemy. Whilst OVs opened the scoring with a goal from a narrow angle by James, Columbians quickly replied. The OVs were soon back in front after an excellent move down the left resulted in a chest high pass across the goal which was finished superbly on the volley by Smith. The scores were levelled just before half time as the Columbians broke quickly on the counter attack. OVs looked much better in second half and created numerous chances but the score remain level due to some excellent saves by the Columbians’ keeper. With 10-minutes to go Dicker coolly chipped the advancing keeper for a 3-2 lead. With the team soaking up sustained Guernsey pressure, and with the last seconds ticking down, Millar scored the deciding goal. Marvellous!

Five OVs in outstanding Jersey ICC cricket victories vs. Italy
Jersey have qualified for affiliate membership of the International Cricket Council following two stunning one day international matches against the Italian national side. Following two fantastic wins in Grosetti against Italy Jersey have done more than enough to become an associate member of the ICC. On Friday they replied to the Italian's 266-7 score to win by a massive 8 wickets, on Saturday it was much the same as they made their required 215 with 2.3 overs to spare, once again only having lost 2 wickets. Six OV players were part of the squad; Chris Jones, Bobby Minty, Tom Minty, Peter Gough, Jonny Gough & Ward Jenner with Manager Chris Minty. Peter Gough is pictured with Jersey Captain Matt Hague after both scored hundreds in the first game. Story extracts taken from http://www.bbc.co.uk

Sailor Sharp receives Sports Council's top award
Trans-Atlantic sailor Phil Sharp was crowned the Jersey Sports Council's Sports Person of the Year last night. Sharp enjoyed a tremendous 2006, capped by a superb 18-day victory in class 40 of the prestigious Route du Rhum solo yacht race across the Atlantic. The class was the largest in the race and Sharp's victory over several highly-rated French sailors thrust him into the international spotlight. Said a modest Sharp: 'It was anything but a solo venture and I would like to thank all the team that helped me get to the starting line.' Currie back on the track
After ten years out of the limelight former island athlete and OV Rob Currie is making a comeback to competitive sport, only this time he'll be wearing bike leathers rather than running spikes. Just over a decade ago Rob Currie was a familiar name as one of the island’s fastest men over 100m (he won 7 athletics medals from four Island Games). Fast forward 10 years and he’s back in competitive sport, only this time he’ll be even quicker - because he’ll be astride a motorbike competing in the Forza Xtreme class with the British Motorcycle Racing Club, which will take him to five different race circuits. “The biggest challenge that faces me will be financing my racing,” says Currie, who will be riding a Yamaha R1 1000cc bike. “A pair of running spikes costing £30 used to last me a couple of years. A pair of tyres for the bike cost £150 and last one meeting!” Currie, who is sponsored by Jersey Telecoms, will be taking part in his first race on Saturday 10 March at Brands Hatch, Kent. "OV1" makes impressive bobsleigh debut
Jersey's bobsleighers made a hugely impressive debut in the British Championships with Commonwealth Games athlete Lauren Thérin striking gold as brakewoman in GB1 in the ladies twos. Novices Will Golder and Jamie Millar, both OVs, also impressed with a remarkable 8th place in the two-man bob - astounding many of the seasoned bobsleighers at the event in Igls, Austria. And they were not the only Jersey representatives - one of the teams Will and Jamie beat included Old Victorian and now RAF officer John Le Cornu. Will and Jamie only started in the sport in October after Lieut-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway launched his search for potential Olympians in one of his favourite sports.

Hickling loses, Rothwell and Hibbs win
With Hopkins aiming to exact revenge for his earlier loss to Hickling in this season's CI Championships, his tactics were clear from the start - to cut out the unforced errors that had dogged him in their previous encounter and increase the tempo of the rallies to take advantage of the 15 years in age that separates the two players. And indeed it was the physical superiority of Hopkins' game that had most effect as Hickling seemed to tire at important stages in the match. Hickling started well, soaking up the early pressure to win a tight first game in which Hopkins made three or four unforced errors to have the crowd thinking Hickling could be on course to record successive victories over last year's winner. However, these errors proved to be the 29-year-old's last and he won the second game easily. The third and fourth games were tighter as Hopkins continued to play at a fast pace hitting powerful, straight lengths and accurate boasts that were sapping the strength from Hickling. Nevertheless, Hickling continued to play clever squash to keep in touch but couldn't deny a determined Hopkins who, to his credit, remained focused and strong throughout the third and fourth games to record a satisfying 3-1 win and retain his Island Championship trophy. In the men's C event Jeremy Rothwell beat Barry Middleton 3-0, while the men's B event was won by Oliver Duquemin who showed remarkable fitness in beating Si Aziz in a tough four set match having earlier beaten his twin brother Ben in an equally tough four set match for the under-19 title. Jon Hibbs retained his over-35 title with a 3-0 win over Hugh Jones.

Sailor Sharp wins BBC Jersey Sports Award
Sailor Phil Sharp has been named as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2006 following his win in the Route du Rhum. 5 year-old Phil won Classe 40 of the challenging solo transatlantic event. His victory earns him a place in the history books as only the second Briton ever to win a class in this race - the first was Dame Ellen MacArthur. The Route du Rhum, which takes place every 4 years, sees sailors single-handedly race from St Malo, France to the West Indies island of Guadeloupe; a distance of approximately 6300 miles. Perhaps what makes Phil’s success all the more notable is that he was the only competitor in the Rhum who didn’t have full corporate sponsorship - he was essentially an amateur racing against a fleet of professional yachtsmen. Father and son skittle out cricket's Seniors
Youth shone alongside experience last night as Rathbone OVs defeated Jersey Seniors by a massive 103 runs in the NatWest Indoor League at Fort Regent. OVs recovered from ten runs for two wickets after the first over, and later 40 for 4, to reach 118 for 5 in their 12 overs. Jon Giles and Bobby Minty pulled them out of trouble scoring 51 not out and 47 respectively - Giles notching the first half-century of his career either indoor or outside. Seniors were then skittled for just 15 runs with father-and-son Chris and Ben Searson doing the damage with the ball. Chris took one wicket for no runs in two maiden overs while Ben, who lives in France with the family but is back to complete his sixth form at Victoria College, grabbed four wickets for six runs in 2.4 overs. Rathbone OVs captain Ward Jenner said: 'It was an amazing turn around, we were looking at a low score when Gilesy and Bobby turned it round for us - Gilesy getting his highest score ever in competitive cricket. 'Young Ben is Jersey's first international cricketer having represented France at under-15 level, he looks a promising medium-pacer as he gets the ball through nicely and is very accurate.' Rob Hickling wins the Jersey Squash Club's men's closed championship title
Rob Hickling won the Jersey Squash Club's men's closed championship title for the eighth time on Saturday. Playing in the Bedell Cristin JSC closed championships at St Clement, the Island player, now heading towards veteran status, beat John Hibbs 9-7, 9-2, 9-5 in the final. After his success in the Channel Islands championships only three weeks ago, when he beat former professional Mike Hopkins to take the title, Hickling was always going to be the favourite, although he paid credit, afterwards, to squash development officer David Evans for improving his game. President's XI in mud bath!
Whilst we lost the football 2-1 there was a bigger number to mention. The total age of all OVs who played was 555 and averaged 40; it truly was the old OVs, especially with Searson back from France for a cameo! With standing water and plenty of mud it was quit literally a game of two halves, one wind assisted and one not, and two touchlines. Well you couldn’t play in the middle, there was too much mud and water. The School started wind behind and despite some solid defending by Rowley and creative keeping by Le Couteur scored two goals. The midfield of Furness, Cameron, Hickling and Vowden played sweeping football in places but little impact could be made with Bryant and Bowden knee deep in mud. The wind unfortunately dropped in the 2nd half, so no long range efforts from Jenner, but a more competitive match ensued as the OVs injected pace down the flanks causing the School many problems. A glorious move culminating in a 20 yard sliding finish from Bowden saw the OVs score a deserved goal. Pressure led to at least a dozen OV corners, which mostly came to nothing, and undoubtedly if the School had goal-line technology a corner from Smith would have been seen to have hit the back of the net for an equaliser. Unfortunately Mr Burns, Master in Charge and referee, was doing his shoe lace up at the time and missed the goal. With OV legs and lungs failing the final whistle was blown and 3-loud cheers were offered by both sides. Good luck to the School in the upcoming UK tour.

Triumph for solo sailor
OV Phil Sharp described himself as 'ecstatic' after crossing the finish line in Pointe à Pitre, Guadeloupe, last night to win Class 40 of the Route du Rhum. After 18 days, 10 hours, 21 minutes and 18 seconds, 25-year-old Sharp finally crossed the line at 11.23 pm. Mr Sharp said: 'There were more than 100 people at the finish to welcome me in, and I'm just totally over the moon to win the race. I was presented with a magnum of champagne and I celebrated in true Formula 1 style.' Mr Sharp is now the first Briton since Dame Ellen MacArthur to win this prestigious solo yacht race across the Atlantic. Story extract from http://thisisjersey.com by Lauren Gouyette. |
For the second time but against more competitors, and without loosing his shorts during the swim this year, Fabian Baker won the Jersey Sufboard Club's Beach Ironman trophy at St Ouen. Competing against another 81 atheletes, Baker eventually took the title folowing a strong 1,500m paddle offshore at the Watersplash and a strong 3.5km beach run which saw him shake off all other serious challengers. President's XI ease past School
Saturday 15th July saw a beautifully sunny day at College Field as the President's XI played the School's 1st XI. Whilst the past few seasons have seen draws and ties the "Old Boys" eased past the School with around an over to go. The School batting with purpose early on and with some pinch hitting down the order posted an excellent 165 for 7 declared. Highlights were Tom Wherry's first ever 50 for the School, in his last game, and as captain, and Gibbs Jnr being caught by Gibbs Snr, but more of that later. Post the excellent tea someone lit the touch paper and Tony Ray went ballistic with a variety of cuts, pulls and occasional drives off his forehead (true). Before we blinked in our deck chairs he was out for 36. As wickets started to fall we had the second instalment of the Gibb's show - Gibb Snr bowled Gibbs Jnr. As batsmen came and went it was left to our WG Grace look-alike, James "JC" Cartmell, to thwack the ball twice into the Howard Davies car park, once into Beaulieu and then just all over the park to win the game with some ease. Marvellous!
